Teatro Colón Bogotá

Bogotá, Colombia

The Teatro Colón in Bogotá, officially the Teatro de Cristóbal Colón, is the national theatre of Colombia. The foundation stone was laid on 5 October 1885 on the site of the Coliseo Ramírez and the Teatro Maldonado, and the theatre opened in October 1892 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. The Italian Pietro Cantini, who was also building the National Capitol, designed the Neoclassical façade in the Tuscan Doric order, while the Swiss Luigi Ramelli created the ornamentation. The 785-seat horseshoe auditorium is modelled on the Palais Garnier in Paris at about half the size; the drop curtain by Florentine painter Annibale Gatti has hung there since 1891. The theatre has been a National Monument since 1975. The peace agreement with the FARC was signed here on 24 November 2016.
