The Teatro Camões in Lisbon's Parque das Nações was built in 1997 and 1998 for the Expo 98 world exhibition and stands on the Tagus between the Oceanarium and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento. It was designed by the Risco practice under architect Manuel Salgado. The theatre opened on 26 September 1998 with the world premiere of Philip Glass's opera O Corvo Branco, directed by Robert Wilson to a libretto by Luísa Costa Gomes. After the Expo it was placed under the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and enlarged for the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra. Since 2002 the Companhia Nacional de Bailado, the national ballet, has programmed the theatre, which has been its permanent home since 2003. The auditorium seats 873; in 2024 the building was renovated at a cost of 3.5 million euros.
The Portuguese national ballet rehearses in the same building where it performs — a rarity, as most companies train in separate studios far from the stage.
