The Stadttheater Bern on Kornhausplatz 20 opened on 25 September 1903 with Wagner's Tannhäuser. The Neo-Baroque building was erected from 1901 by architect René von Wurstemberger, financed by the Berner Stadt-Theater company; it replaced the Hôtel de Musique, which had served as the city's theatre for a century. The house was modernised in 2015 and 2016. Since 2011 the theatre and the Bern Symphony Orchestra have been united in a foundation, renamed Bühnen Bern from the 2021/22 season. The four-genre company, with permanent ensembles for opera, drama and ballet, gives around 400 performances a season. Since 2007 it has also used the Vidmarhallen in Köniz, while the orchestra's concerts take place at the Casino Bern.
The Bern City Theatre resides in the Classicist 1903 building — Bern was an important Swiss theatre city in the nineteenth century, and the three-genre house cultivates a special tradition with contemporary Swiss drama.
