The Qatar National Theatre is located on the Doha Corniche near Al Bidda Park. The 490-seat theatre opened in the 1980s and is owned by the Ministry of Culture. From the outset it was equipped with computerised lighting, translation facilities and an orchestra pit. It presents plays and concerts, hosting Arab and international companies as well as local troupes; the English-language amateur group Doha Players has also staged its productions here. In 2013 the theatre was the venue for the Arab Theatre Festival, which Qatar was hosting for the first time. In 2022 the sculpture Rock on Top of Another Rock by Peter Fischli and David Weiss was installed at the theatre. In 2023 performances were suspended for renovation work.
The Qatar National Theatre in Doha, opened in 2010, is part of the cultural modernisation of the Gulf state — the architecture combines traditional Islamic motifs with contemporary modernism.
