The Prince Edward Theatre in Soho, opened in 1930 in the elegant Art Deco style to plans by the architect Edward A. Stone, is, with 1,716 seats, among the largest and technically most modern houses of the West End. Named after the then Prince of Wales (the later King Edward VIII), the house went through several identities — among others as the Casino Theatre and a cinema — before being reborn as a musical house in 1978. Since the late 1970s the Prince Edward has shown prestigious productions such as "Evita", "Chess", "Miss Saigon" and "Mamma Mia!". Currently Cameron Mackintosh's "MJ — The Musical", the biopic about Michael Jackson, resides here. The location in the middle of Soho with its bars, restaurants and lively street atmosphere makes a theatre visit here an urban overall experience.
The Prince Edward Theatre, opened in 1930, was the venue of historic musical premieres — Evita had its West End premiere here in 1978, and Mamma Mia! ran without interruption from 1999 to 2012.
