Opéra National de Bordeaux

Bordeaux, France

The Opéra National de Bordeaux is based at the Grand-Théâtre, designed by Victor Louis for the Maréchal de Richelieu and opened in April 1780. The neoclassical building is dominated by a portico of twelve colossal Corinthian columns, whose entablature carries twelve statues of the nine Muses and the goddesses Juno, Venus and Minerva. Its grand interior staircase served as a model for the staircase of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. The ballet La fille mal gardée premiered here in 1789, and in 1871 the building briefly housed the National Assembly. The Italian-style auditorium, seating around 1,000, regained its original blue and gold colours in 1991. Today it presents opera and ballet, while the Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine has given its symphony concerts at the Auditorium de Bordeaux since 2013.
