Novello Theatre

London, United Kingdom

The Novello Theatre on the Aldwych, opened in 1905 to plans by the architect W.G.R. Sprague as the Waldorf Theatre, forms a harmonious architectural pair with the Aldwych Theatre, also designed by Sprague. The elegant Beaux-Arts façade and the classically designed foyer shape the impression of a distinguished Edwardian house. In 2005 the theatre was renamed in honour of the British composer and actor Ivor Novello. Over the decades the Novello has shown a remarkable range — from Shakespeare productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company through chamber pieces to musicals such as "Footloose" and currently "Mamma Mia!", which has been shown here continuously since 2012. With around 1,100 seats, the house offers a pleasantly intimate atmosphere in the heart of the theatre district.

The Novello Theatre, formerly the Strand Theatre, has had its current name since 2005 in honour of the Welsh composer Ivor Novello — a tradition-rich West End house with over 100 years of theatre history.
