National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, known as Weiwuying, in Fengshan District is the first national performing arts venue in southern Taiwan and opened on 13 October 2018. It stands on a former military training ground, now part of the Weiwuying Metropolitan Park. Mecanoo, led by Francine Houben, won the design competition in 2007; the wave-shaped roof of about 35,000 square metres covers four halls and is regarded as the largest theatre under one roof. The Opera House seats 2,236, the vineyard-style Concert Hall 1,981, the Playhouse 1,209 and the Recital Hall 434. The Klais organ in the Concert Hall, with 9,085 pipes, is the largest in Asia. The curved interior walls were made using shipbuilding techniques. The centre belongs to the National Performing Arts Center.
