The Lyceum Theatre in Covent Garden goes back to the year 1765 and is thus one of the oldest theatre sites in London — although today's building dates from 1834 and was fundamentally redesigned in 1904 in the stage-architectural style of the time. In the 19th century the Lyceum was the artistic home of the legendary actor Henry Irving and his partner Ellen Terry, who raised Shakespearean theatre here to the highest level. Since October 1999 the Lyceum has been the home of Disney's "The Lion King" in the original staging by Julie Taymor — a worldwide success that regularly fills the 2,100-seat house. Taymor's visionary combination of African masks, dance and puppet theatre has made the Lyceum one of the most visited theatre destinations in London.
The Lyceum Theatre London has been home to Disney's The Lion King since 1999 — one of the most successful musicals of all time with over 25 years of run and over 100 million pounds in revenue.
