Glyndebourne is one of the most famous opera festivals in the world, taking place annually from May to August at the Glyndebourne private estate near Lewes in the English county of East Sussex. Founded in 1934 by John Christie out of love for his wife, the singer Audrey Mildmay, the festival is known for the highest musical quality and a unique ritual: performances begin in the late afternoon, with an extended interval during which visitors enjoy picnics in the gardens — many in formal evening dress. The new opera house built in 1994 with around 1,200 seats replaced the original smaller hall. Programme: Mozart, Handel, Janáček, and contemporary works.
