Biography
Willy Russell, born 1947 in Liverpool, is one of the most significant British playwrights and songwriters of his generation. His works reflect the lifeworld of the English working class with humour, social sharpness, and a distinctive language. His musical Blood Brothers (1983) is one of the most successful British musical productions of all time and ran for over 10,000 performances in the West End alone. Other major works include Educating Rita (1980) — about a hairdresser who wants to study English literature — and Shirley Valentine (1986), both also successfully filmed. Russell's works are performed worldwide and are regular parts of British school curricula; he is among the most formative voices of British popular theatre literature.
