Biography
Werner Schwab (1958-1994) was one of the most provocative Austrian playwrights of the late twentieth century. Born in Graz, he burst into German-language theatre in the early 1990s with a radically new theatrical language — violent, scatological, shocking, but of precise dramatic construction. His works such as Die Präsidentinnen (1990), Volksvernichtung oder Meine Leber ist sinnlos (1991), and Faust :: Mein Brustkorb :: Mein Helm (1992) questioned the hypocrisy of post-war Austrian society with disturbing drasticness. Schwab died in Graz on New Year's Eve 1994 from alcohol poisoning — shortly before his 36th birthday. Despite his short life, he left around 15 plays that are now part of the German-language theatre repertoire.
