Thierry Malandain

b. 1959 · French

Biography

Thierry Malandain was born in Le Petit-Quevilly in Normandy in 1959. As a dancer he was engaged by the Paris Opera Ballet, the Ballet du Rhin and the Ballet-théâtre français de Nancy before leaving the stage in 1986 to found the Compagnie Temps Présent. Since 1998 he has directed the Centre chorégraphique national in Biarritz, known today as Malandain Ballet Biarritz. With more than 80 choreographies, including “Cendrillon” (2013), “Noé” (2017) and “Marie-Antoinette” (2019) for the Opéra Royal of Versailles, he openly embraces a neoclassical dance idiom; many of his pieces are also performed by other companies. In 2019 he was elected to the newly created choreography section of the Académie des beaux-arts, and in 2012 he received the Grand Prix de la danse from the French critics' association.
