Svenja Viola Bungarten is a German playwright among the most distinguished voices of young German-language theatre literature. Her play Maria Magda won the Mülheim Drama Prize in 2022 — one of the most important awards for German-language contemporary drama. Bungarten's writing combines linguistic distinctiveness with precise observation of social conditions and a sense for the abyssally comic. Her plays are shown at renowned stages such as the Schauspiel Köln, the Burgtheater, and the Residenztheater München, and stand for a literarily ambitious yet accessible theatrical voice.
