Biography
Stephen Flaherty (born 1960) is an American musical theatre composer who has worked closely with the lyricist Lynn Ahrens since the 1980s. The duo created Once on This Island (1990) and above all Ragtime (1998), a large-scale setting of E. L. Doctorow's novel about turn-of-the-century America, which won the Tony Award for Best Score. Flaherty's stylistic range extends from ragtime and cakewalk to Caribbean calypso; he is among the most ambitious storytellers of the modern American musical.
