Biography
Simon Stone was born in Basel in 1984 and grew up in Cambridge and, from 1996, in Melbourne, where he studied and first worked as an actor in film and television. In 2007 he founded the theatre company The Hayloft Project, and in 2011 he became resident director at Belvoir in Sydney, where he wrote and directed his new version of Ibsen's The Wild Duck. From 2015 he was a house director at Theater Basel and in the same year won the Nestroy Theatre Prize for best direction for John Gabriel Borkman. His work is defined by rewritings in which he reshapes canonical plays together with the ensemble into contemporary texts of his own, among them Ibsen Huis (2017) for Toneelgroep Amsterdam, which he brought to the Burgtheater in December 2025 as Das Ferienhaus, Hotel Strindberg (2018) and Komplizen (2021) after Gorky. His version of Lorca's Yerma at the Young Vic in London won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2017. He also directs opera, for example at the Salzburg Festival and the Metropolitan Opera, and made the feature films The Daughter (2015) and The Dig (2021).
