Biography

Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalkov was born in 1913 in Moscow and died there on 27 August 2009. He began publishing poems, fables and children's books in 1928, and in 1942 Joseph Stalin commissioned him to write the lyrics for the Soviet national anthem; he later also wrote the text of the Russian national anthem. Besides poetry and children's literature, Mikhalkov also wrote for the stage, including the comedy Die Wilden (1958), and for film, including the screenplay for The Adventures of Puss in Boots (1957). He chaired the Writers' Union of the Russian SFSR from 1970 to 1990. He was the father of the directors Andrei Konchalovsky and Nikita Mikhalkov.
