Biography

Rolf Hochhuth was born in 1931 in Eschwege, left school with an intermediate certificate, and trained as a bookseller; from 1950 to 1955 he worked as a bookseller in Marburg, Kassel and Munich, then as an editor for the Bertelsmann Lesering book club. His debut play Der Stellvertreter, premiered by Erwin Piscator in West Berlin in 1963, sparked the biggest theatre controversy in the Federal Republic to date and made him internationally famous. Over the following decades he wrote numerous further documentary-style plays on contemporary and social themes, including Ärztinnen (1980), about the pharmaceutical industry, and McKinsey kommt (2004), about management consulting and unemployment. His work earned him, among other honours, the Berlin Art Prize in 1963 and the Art Prize of the City of Basel in 1976. Hochhuth died in Berlin in 2020.
