Biography

Pina Bausch (1940-2009), born in Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia, transformed European choreography and created Tanztheater as a distinct and influential theatrical form. Bausch studied with Kurt Jooss at the Folkwang School in Essen before leading the Tanztheater Wuppertal from 1973 until her death. Her signature works include Café Müller (1978), Kontakthof (1978), Nelken (1982), and her landmark reinterpretation of Le Sacre du Printemps (1975) performed on an earth-covered stage. Bausch's working method involved extensive questions posed to her dancers, whose personal responses were choreographed into fragmentary sequences of image and movement. Her influence reaches far beyond dance—Pedro Almodóvar features her work prominently in Talk to Her (2002). Bausch died in Wuppertal just five days after a cancer diagnosis in 2009; the Tanztheater Wuppertal continues under subsequent artistic leadership.
