Biography
Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais was born on 24 January 1732 in Paris, the son of a watchmaker, and initially trained in his father's trade before rising socially by purchasing a court office. Alongside his writing, he worked at times as a music teacher at court, as the publisher of Voltaire's complete works, and as a secret agent and arms dealer; through the trading company Rodrigue Hortalez et Cie., which he co-founded, he supplied arms to the American revolutionaries. With the Figaro trilogy — "The Barber of Seville" (1775), "The Marriage of Figaro" (1784) and "The Guilty Mother" (1792) — he created his best-known works for the stage, whose social criticism repeatedly brought him into conflict with censorship. He died on 18 May 1799 in Paris.
