Biography
Nicola De Giosa (1819–1885) was an Italian opera composer and conductor from Bari. Trained at the Naples Conservatory under teachers including Donizetti, he wrote more than twenty operas, of which the opera buffa Don Checco (1850) became his greatest success and long held the stage. He also made his name as a sought-after conductor at major Italian opera houses, helping to disseminate the contemporary repertoire. De Giosa embodies the rich Neapolitan operatic tradition of the nineteenth century beyond its most famous names.
