Biography
Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli was born on 4 April 1752 in Naples and trained at the Conservatorio Santa Maria di Loreto under Fedele Fenaroli and Alessandro Speranza. He made his stage debut at the Teatro San Carlo in 1779 with the opera 'Montezuma'; his greatest success came in 1796 with 'Giulietta e Romeo', which delighted audiences across Europe until Rossini set new standards. Zingarelli served as Kapellmeister of Milan Cathedral and later as papal Kapellmeister in Rome, before taking over direction of the Naples Conservatory in 1813, a post he held until his death. His students there included Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti and Saverio Mercadante. He died on 5 May 1837 in Torre del Greco.
