Biography

Meredith Willson (1902–1984) was an American composer, lyricist, librettist, and conductor. Originally a flautist in John Philip Sousa's band and the New York Philharmonic, he created with The Music Man (1957) one of the most successful Broadway hits of the 1950s, supplying music, lyrics, and book. The work beat West Side Story for the Tony Award. With numbers like Seventy-Six Trombones and Till There Was You—recorded by the Beatles—he entered the collective memory. His nostalgic vision of the American Midwest pervades his work.
