Biography

Madame Nielsen was born in Aalborg in 1963 and worked under the name Claus Beck-Nielsen until 2001. She graduated from the Forfatterskolen writing school in Copenhagen in 1993, made her debut that year with the radio play Bjerget and wrote theatre reviews for the newspaper Politiken from 1996 to 1999. Between 2002 and 2011 she gathered novels, plays and actions under the name Das Beckwerk; in 2003 the play Parlament earned her the Reumert Award as playwright of the year. Changing names and artistic personas form the core of her autofictional work. Since her novels began appearing in German in 2018 she has worked increasingly in German-speaking countries, for example in 2024 as playwright, composer and performer at the Münchner Kammerspiele. The Volkstheater Wien premieres her play Lamento in 2026.
