Biography

Klaus Mann (1906–1949) was a German-American writer, the eldest son of Thomas Mann. Active in literature from an early age, he became a distinctive voice of the Weimar Republic and its artistic ferment. His most famous novel, Mephisto (1936), is an unsparing reckoning with the opportunism of artists in the Third Reich, modelled on his former brother-in-law Gustaf Gründgens. Mann emigrated in 1933 and became one of the most committed antifascist writers of the exile, editing the journal Die Sammlung. Marked by rootlessness and addiction, he took his own life in Cannes in 1949.
