Biography
Joseph Haydn was born on 31 March or 1 April 1732 in Rohrau, Lower Austria, and died on 31 May 1809 in Vienna. From 1761 to 1790 he served as Kapellmeister at the court of the Esterházy princes, becoming First Kapellmeister in 1766 with responsibility for the opera ensemble at Eszterháza, for which he composed most of his stage works. In the 1790s he undertook two successful journeys to London, where, among other works, his late symphonies were written. Haydn is traditionally regarded as a pioneering figure of the classical symphony and string quartet and shaped the Viennese Classical style through his extensive output.
