Biography

Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin on 30 November 1667 and began studying theology at the University of Dublin in 1682. He became an Anglican clergyman, wrote political pamphlets for the Tories and was rewarded with the post of Dean of St Patrick's in Dublin. He made his name with the satire A Tale of a Tub (1704); in the Drapier's Letters and A Modest Proposal (1729) he sharply attacked English policy towards Ireland. His best-known work is Gulliver's Travels (1726), a journey through fantastical lands that mocks human vanity, politics and science and is often read as a children's book. Swift died in Dublin on 19 October 1745.
