Biography
Jonathan Larson was born in 1960 in Mount Vernon, New York, and created with Rent one of the most influential musicals of the 1990s. The show, a modern adaptation of Puccini's La Bohème, transposes the action to Manhattan's Lower East Side and addresses HIV/AIDS, poverty, and the search for artistic authenticity. Tragically, Larson died in the night before the first preview of Rent on 25 January 1996 from an undetected aortic aneurysm, only thirty-five years old. Rent became posthumously a worldwide success, won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award, and ran for over twelve years on Broadway. His earlier work Tick, Tick... Boom! was filmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in 2021. Larson democratised the musical by opening it to a young generation that did not feel addressed by traditional Broadway.
