Biography

Johannes Brahms was born in 1833 in Hamburg and is considered alongside Bach and Beethoven one of the three great Bs of German music. His four symphonies, the violin concerto, and the double concerto belong to the indispensable core repertoire of every orchestra. A German Requiem set to texts from Luther's Bible is one of the most moving choral works of the Romantic period and made the thirty-three-year-old suddenly famous. Brahms was a master of chamber music and art song who held classical form and Romantic expressive will in unique balance. Robert Schumann prophesied a great future for the young Brahms in a famous essay. In Vienna, where he spent most of his life, he became the central figure of musical life and the antipode of Wagner and Bruckner. Brahms died in 1897 in Vienna.
