Biography
Jerry Herman (1931–2019) was an American composer and lyricist, a master of the upbeat, melodically memorable Broadway musical. Unlike most of his colleagues, he wrote both music and lyrics himself. His Hello, Dolly! (1964) knocked the Beatles off the top of the US charts; Mame (1966) and La Cage aux Folles (1983) followed, the latter creating in I Am What I Am an anthem of self-affirmation. Herman won two Tony Awards and is regarded as one of the last great exponents of the classic, melody-rich musical.
