Biography
Jerome Kern (1885–1945) was an American composer and one of the founders of the modern American musical. With Show Boat (1927), created with the lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, he produced the first thoroughly serious "book musical," bringing social themes such as racism to the stage and revolutionising the genre. His song Ol' Man River became world-famous, as did standards like The Way You Look Tonight, for which he won an Academy Award. Kern influenced a whole generation of composers from Gershwin to Rodgers.
