Jaromír Weinberger

1896 – 1967 · Czech

Biography

Jaromír Weinberger was born in Prague in 1896, began playing the piano at five and was already composing by the age of ten; he studied at the Prague Conservatory with Vítězslav Novák and Karel Hoffmeister and later with Max Reger in Leipzig. His opera "Schwanda the Bagpiper" (1927) became an international success that made him the best-known Czech opera composer of his generation; his operetta "Frühlingsstürme" (1933) went down in history as the last operetta of the Weimar Republic. In 1937 he emigrated to the United States, settling in St. Petersburg, Florida, and became an American citizen in 1948. Afflicted by cancer and financial worries, he died in 1967 from an overdose of sedatives.
