Biography

Jan-Christoph Gockel is a German theatre director and puppeteer who has developed a unique synthesis of figure theatre and political drama. He directs at renowned stages like the Staatstheater Mainz, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, and the Schauspielhaus Bochum. Characteristic of his work is the combination of elaborately constructed puppets with human actors, who together explore material from Shakespeare through Brecht to contemporary drama. Gockel's theatre is visually opulent, politically alert, and understands puppet theatre as a democratic medium that radically levels hierarchies between performers and stage objects. Several of his productions have been invited to theatre festivals.
