Imre Madách

Biography

Imre Madách was born on 20 January 1823 in Alsósztregova into a Hungarian noble family and studied law. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49 he was imprisoned for a time for sheltering an insurgent and subsequently withdrew to his estate. It was during this period of isolation, marked by personal loss, that he wrote his principal work, the dramatic poem The Tragedy of Man (1861). From 1861 he served as a member of the Hungarian parliament. Madách died on 5 October 1864 in his birthplace.
