Gustav Mahler

1860 – 1911 · Austrian

Biography

Gustav Mahler was born in 1860 in Kalischt in Bohemia and was one of the towering personalities of the music world around 1900. As director of the Vienna Court Opera from 1897 to 1907, he fundamentally reformed opera operation and set standards that apply to this day. His ten symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde are among the most monumental works of orchestral literature and unite existential depth with sonic innovation. Mahler saw himself as triply homeless: as a Bohemian among Austrians, as an Austrian among Germans, and as a Jew throughout the world. Although he composed no operas, as a conductor he lastingly shaped the performance practice of music theatre. His rediscovery in the 1960s led to an unprecedented Mahler boom that continues to this day. Mahler died in 1911 in Vienna.
