Biography

The Gipsy Kings are a band from Arles in the south of France, founded in the late 1970s by the brothers of the Reyes family and their cousins from the Baliardo family, descendants of Spanish Gitanos. Their music blends Catalan rumba and flamenco with salsa and pop, sung mostly in Spanish. After two little noticed albums they achieved their international breakthrough in 1987 with the album Gipsy Kings and songs such as Bamboléo and Djobi Djoba, later followed by hits like their version of Volare. Together with the British arranger John Cameron they wrote the score of the musical Zorro, which premiered in England in 2008 and plays at the Teatro La Latina in Madrid from November 2026.
