Biography
George Benjamin, born in London in 1960, studied as a teenager with Olivier Messiaen in Paris, whose youngest pupil he was. Still in his twenties, he drew international attention with the orchestral work "Ringed by the Flat Horizon." Benjamin composes slowly and with extreme care; his output spans orchestral works, chamber music and, above all, the operas created in collaboration with the playwright Martin Crimp. With "Written on Skin" (2012) and "Lessons in Love and Violence" (2018) he produced two of the most frequently performed operas of the twenty-first century. Benjamin is also a sought-after conductor and is Professor of Composition at King's College London.
