Biography
Galt MacDermot (1928–2018) was a Canadian-American composer and pianist. With the "American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" Hair (1967) he wrote one of the most influential works in musical history and brought rock fully onto the Broadway stage for the first time. MacDermot, trained in classical music and South African township jazz, later also won a Tony for Two Gentlemen of Verona. His music influenced the hip-hop generation through sampling hits. Hair, with its anthems Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In, became the sound of an entire counterculture.
