Friedrich Hebbel

1813 – 1863 · German

Biography

Friedrich Hebbel was born in 1813 in Wesselburen, Dithmarschen, the son of a bricklayer, and grew up in poor circumstances. From 1835 he lived in Hamburg, where he published early poems and stories, before attending lectures without a degree in Heidelberg and Munich and earning a doctorate in Erlangen in 1846. With dramas such as "Judith" (1840), "Genoveva" (1843) and "Maria Magdalena" (1843) he established himself as a playwright; in 1846 he settled in Vienna, where he married the court actress Christine Enghaus. His late work includes "Agnes Bernauer" (1851), "Gyges and His Ring" (1854) and the trilogy "The Nibelungs" (1861/62), for which he received the Schiller Prize in 1863. Hebbel died in Vienna in 1863 and is regarded as the most significant German playwright between Georg Büchner and naturalism.
