Biography

Franz von Suppè (1819–1895) was an Austrian composer of Dalmatian origin, considered the founder of Viennese operetta. A distant relative of Donizetti, he wrote more than 200 stage works, of which the spirited overtures have above all endured. His overtures to Poet and Peasant and Light Cavalry are among the most performed orchestral pieces in the world and have remained popular through countless films and cartoons. With works such as Boccaccio (1879) he paved the way for the golden age of Viennese operetta led by Johann Strauss.
