Biography
Franz Schubert was born on 31 January 1797 in Himmelpfortgrund near Vienna and received early violin and piano lessons from his father and brother. In 1808 he became a choirboy of the imperial court chapel and later studied under Antonio Salieri, among others. After a brief spell as a teaching assistant at his father's school, he lived from 1818 as a freelance composer in Vienna, supported by a close circle of friends who held the informal musical gatherings known as "Schubertiads". Besides more than 600 songs, including the cycles "Die schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise", he wrote symphonies, chamber music, masses and several stage works, almost none of which was successfully performed in his lifetime. Schubert died in Vienna on 19 November 1828, probably of typhoid fever, at the age of only 31.
