Biography
Boieldieu was born in Rouen in 1775, where he trained as a choirboy and studied with cathedral organist Charles Broche. In 1795 he moved to Paris, and the Opéra-Comique soon staged several of his works, including his first major success, Le calife de Bagdad, in 1800. From 1803 to 1811 he served as court composer in Saint Petersburg, before returning triumphantly to Paris with Jean de Paris in 1812. From 1817 he taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire, and in 1825 he wrote his best-known and genre-defining work, La Dame blanche. He died in 1834 near Paris.
