Biography
Francesco Cilea (1866–1950) was an Italian opera composer of the verismo school. Born in Calabria, he studied at the Naples Conservatory, which he later directed. His masterpiece Adriana Lecouvreur (1902), based on the life of a celebrated Parisian actress, remains part of the international repertoire and is admired for its lyrical elegance. L'Arlesiana (1897), source of the popular tenor aria È la solita storia, is also still performed. Cilea was known as a reticent, meticulous composer who kept apart from the bustle of operatic life.
