Biography
Elizabeth T. Spira (1942-2019) was an Austrian journalist and documentary filmmaker whose work shaped Austrian television. Her legendary ORF series Alltagsgeschichten (Everyday Stories, 1985-2006) portrayed the lives of ordinary Austrians for over two decades with empathy, subtle humour, and an unfeigned view of small human dramas — pub regulars, allotment gardeners, marriage fraud victims. The series became a cultural phenomenon and shaped the image of Austria in self-perception as well as in the international press. Spira received numerous awards, including the Golden Romy. Her work is studied at film schools today and is a model for an entire generation of documentary filmmakers.
