Biography
Dirk Laucke, born 1982 in Schkeuditz near Leipzig and raised in Halle an der Saale, is among the most important East German playwrights of his generation. He initially studied psychology in Leipzig, later scenic writing at the University of the Arts Berlin. In 2006 he received the Kleist Promotion Prize for alter ford escort dunkelblau, in 2007 he was voted by Theater heute magazine as Young Author of the Year. Laucke's plays move, as he himself says, between research and fiction: he collects original quotes from the everyday life of East German small towns and forms them into plays about unemployment, right-wing violence, and the consequences of reunification. In 2010 he received the Playwrights' Prize of the Cultural Circle of German Industry.
