Biography

Daniil Kharms, born Daniil Ivanovich Yuvachev, was born in Saint Petersburg in 1905. In 1927 he founded the artists' group OBERIU with Alexander Vvedensky and Nikolai Zabolotsky, which devoted itself to a radically absurd art. His play Elizaveta Bam was written at the end of 1927 and premiered in January 1928 at the performance evening Three Left Hours in the Leningrad House of the Press. Since his writing for adults was hardly ever printed, he earned his living mainly with children's books and contributions to children's magazines. After a first arrest in 1931, he was detained again in 1941 and died in February 1942, during the siege of Leningrad, in the psychiatric ward of a prison. His papers survived thanks to his friend Yakov Druskin and were published only decades later.
