Biography

Cy Coleman (1929–2004), born Seymour Kaufman in the Bronx, was an American composer, pianist, and jazz musician. A trained piano prodigy, he brought the energy of jazz into the Broadway musical. His stage successes range from Sweet Charity (1966) through On the Twentieth Century and City of Angels (1989) to The Will Rogers Follies—crowned several times with the Tony Award.
