Biography
Charlotte Gneuß, born 1992, is one of the most exciting younger voices in contemporary German literature. Her debut novel Gittersee (2023) tells the story of a youth in 1970s East Germany and was nominated for the German Book Prize 2023 — a rare honour for a first work. The novel was celebrated by critics for its atmospherically dense language and the psychological depth of her character drawing. Gneuß lives in Leipzig and also works for the theatre; her material oscillates between East German memory literature and contemporary identity questions of a generation that knows the divided Germany only from stories.
