Biography

Caryl Churchill (born 1938 in London) is among the most formally innovative and politically incisive British dramatists of the past half-century. Her career began with radio plays in the 1960s before her breakthrough stage works: Owners (1972), Cloud Nine (1979, with its gender-bending double casting), Top Girls (1982, with its celebrated opening dinner-party scene of historical and imaginary women), Serious Money (1987, a verse drama about City of London traders), Mad Forest (1990, composed in response to the Romanian revolution), and Far Away (2000). Her later short plays, including A Number (2002) on cloning and Love and Information (2012), have continued her experimentation with fragmented dramatic form. Churchill has refused most interviews and public appearances for decades, letting the work speak for itself. She continues to write; recent plays include Escaped Alone (2016) and Glass. Kill. Bluebeard. Imp. (2019).
