Biography
Carl Zeller (1842-1898) was one of the most important composers of the Golden Operetta Era and, alongside Johann Strauss II and Franz von Suppé, one of the most popular representatives of Viennese operetta in the late nineteenth century. Born in Sankt Peter in der Au in Lower Austria, Zeller was a lawyer by profession at the Austrian Ministry of Education — composition he pursued alongside. His worldwide success was Der Vogelhändler (1891), one of the most beloved operettas in history with hits like Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol and Wie mein Ahnl zwanzig Jahr — to this day a regular part of the operetta repertoire. Der Obersteiger (1894) followed as another success. Zeller passed away in Baden bei Wien in 1898.
